The 700 kilometer long coastline of Maharashtra is a traveler’s dream. This extensive shoreline is endowed with innumerable beaches covered with white sand, sea forts that had witnessed heroic battles between the inhabitants and the pirates of the seas, as well as serene environs that will lull you into sleep when the sun takes a dip into the Arabian Sea. Many of these charming beaches still remain virgin and unspoiled as against those in the neighboring state of Goa where 24 hour fun and frolic will keep you awake till midnight.

Akshi beach, which is just about 5 kilometers away from Alibaug, itself a well known Maharashtra sea beach (140 km away from the state capital) is one such serene sea front where you can spend your days in the lap of nature. This beautiful white sandy beach is also very safe for swimming. It is a favorite among photographers and bird watchers too. In fact, you can see plenty of plovers and gulls, as well as swallows and sandpipers on the beach throughout the year. And, if you are lucky, you may also be able to spot the white-bellied sea eagle perched high on a coconut or suru tree.

Akshi is just a small fishing village. You can rest here for a few days on any weekend before heading back to the hectic lifestyle of Mumbai or Pune. You can relax here under the state of the coconut trees, or go for a swim. Don’t worry. The Arabian Sea at Akshi is completely safe for swimming.

How to reach: You can reach Alibaug (5 kilometers from Akshi) by road. But it can take a long time because the roads aren’t that good. Arriving there in a catamaran will be a far more pleasurable experience. You can buy a ticket and board one of these vessels from the Gateway of India and reach within a very short time, riding the sea waves and viewing the lovely shoreline all the way.

You will find some beachside cottages in Akshi beach, resorts in Akshi beach and hotels in Akshi beach as well. There is also the MTDC approved accommodation available.
