Even the journey to Alibag is most enjoyable. Many tourists visit Alibag by taking a private boat or ferry from the Gateway of India in south Mumbai’s Colaba area to reach the Mandawa Jetty. This takes about 45 minutes. From there, they take a bus or a three-wheeler to reach the beach. Of course, you can take the train or the bus too. It is extremely close to Mumbai. You can plan a visit virtually anytime you want. Many Mumbai residents even have their own farmhouses along the beach here.

 

Apart from waterfront amusements common to most beaches, Alibag has other attractions too. For instance, there are numerous forts, churches, temples and synagogues around Alibag that are worth a visit. The place is rich in history too. It was developed by Sarkhle Kanhoji Aangre, Maratha leader Shivaji’s naval chief during the 17th century. However, the name Alibag has been derived from an affluent resident of the area named Bene Israelite Ali who owned large orchards famed for their Alphonso brand of mangoes (Ali + orchard or Baug). The person also owned various other plantations in this area, and so, people called it Alichi Bagh or Garden of Ali.

 

How to reach: Reaching the Alibag beach is easy. You can take an auto rickshaw or taxi from Pen station. Or you can take a bus directly from Mumbai. Many tourists love to drive themselves to reach Alibag. The quickest way to reach the beach is by taking a ferry from the Gateway of India.

 

There are plenty of hotels in Alibag, resorts in Alibag and cottages in Alibag. Accommodation is available for all types of budgets. Just choose the place where you want to stay.
