If I were you, I would never have hopped on a flight to on my journey from Mumbai to Goa. I would have taken the old jalopy out to drive down the spectacular Konkan coastline to reach the destination, or to settle down in one of the fabulous beaches en route.
As the road zigzags through Dapoli, the ideal mid-stop is at Ratnagiri, which is around 350 kilometers south of Mumbai. It is famed for being the birthplace of Bal Gangadhar Tilak as well as the erstwhile residence of the exiled king of Burma, Thibaw. You have to hurry through this historic township to reach the small village of Kotawde. You will love it on arrival. It is surrounded by hills on three sides. This is Ganapatipule for you, a small town of about hundred houses. There is an amazing beach here. It ranks among the best beaches on India’s west coast. The temple of Swambhu Ganesh (the self-revealing God) stands nearby. Thousands of devotees seek the favor of the deity.
The seashore at Ganapatipule is enchanting. There are cypress trees that line the shore. The beach is serene. However beware! There are death-traps that lie quite near the shore in the form of deep recess under the waves. You should thus be careful when you are bathing in the sea here. In fact, there have been a few accidents when the tourists disregarded the warnings and went too far into the sea. But if you stay careful, then there should be no issues. Ganapatipule can be a great Konkani beach for your weekend vacation.
How to reach: There are many trains and buses that ply the Konkan route. You can take any one of them to reach Ganapatipule. If you are coming by train, then you must get down at Bhoke. Take an auto rickshaw from there. You can also change at Ratnagiri. Private vehicles can reach the beach.
There are a few resorts in Ganapatipule and a few home stays in Ganapatipule too. There are both government and private properties you can choose from.
