Most hill stations in Maharashtra are situated on the Western Ghats or the Sahyadri range of mountains that are not as high as the Himalayas and therefore, are not as chilly as Shimla, Mussoorie or Nainital. Nevertheless, this is more than compensated by numbers. The Britishers, during their Raj in India had tried to create hill stations at every nook and corner of the not-so-high yet picturesque range of the Western Ghats. As a result, we now have a large number of these resort types of towns atop the Sahyadri, some more spectacular than the others. But spectacular or not, all of these Sahyadri hill stations have one thing in common – they become delightfully pleasant during the monsoon months.

Take, for example, the Karjat hill station, which is situated in the Bhor Ghat region of the Sahyadri range. It is located between Mumbai and Pune and has an average elevation of less than 200 meters. Interestingly, it is lower than the soaring buildings in the world (Sears Tower is 442.1 meters, while the famed Burj Khalifa in Dubai is 829.8 meters). Yet Karjat enjoys all the privileges of a conventional hill station. It has all modern amenities that include good accommodation, ample availability of foods, schools, hospitals, entertainment areas, and more.

Additionally, Karjat provides wonderful views during the monsoon months. In fact, you will come across cascading waterfalls at every corner of this small hill town, as you amble down its nature walk trails. Many new adventure sports, such as mountain biking, rafting and kayaking, are being introduced in Karjat now.  A weekend in Karjat is indeed time well spent.

How to reach: Karjat can be visited from both Mumbai and Pune. This small hill station is close to both these cities. You can drive straight to reach Karjat if you want or you can take a bus as well. There are both private and state buses. Alternatively, you can take the train as well. There is a railway station here.

Accommodation is no problem at Karjat. There are a number of Karjat hotels, Karjat resorts and Karjat home stays to choose from.
