Some people believe that Lohgad is actually a hill station in the state of Maharashtra, while others rightly point out that it is a fort. Historians and history buffs point out that the great Maratha leader Shivaji Maharaj’s name is associated with this fort. He captured it in 1648. After Shivaji, this fort passed on to Nana Phadnavis of the Peshwa Period. Several structures were constructed within the fort between 1742 and 1800 AD. You can see many of them even today. The good thing about this fort is that, it is still in relatively good condition. You will be able to see the large gates – there are four gates at Lohgad.

Others don’t quite agree. They say that there are better and bigger forts than Lohgad in the state. They point out that where Lohgad really stands out is in its natural beauty. Perched on top of a hill, the view all around is simply lovely. You can see the basins of the Pavna and Indrayani from the top. Walk through the Ganesh Darwaja to reach the top of the fort and look out towards the lower ramparts. The villages at a distance can be clearly on a good day. The surroundings are lush green.

Trekkers love Lohgad Fort too, because this is among the easiest treks in Maharashtra. Even kids and old people should be able to do this trek without much of a problem. But do remember, you should be wearing comfortable shoes while you are walking. Trek all the way to the “vinchoo point” that looks like the tail of a scorpion. This is the most famous landmark in this fort.

How to reach: You can always drive your car to reach the fort. You can take a train too. There are many trains throughout the day that travel between Mumbai and Pune. Get down at the Malawli railway station. There are regular state transport buses as well.

There are no resorts or hotels in Lohgad. You won’t find any cottages in Lohgad or home stays as well. You can visit the fort from Pune or Mumbai or book hotels in lonavala or resorts in lonavala.
