The port city of Ratnagiri in the India state of Maharashtra is blessed with a beautiful beach which penetrates into the sea. A strip of white sand and black sand are seen together. The Ratnagiri beach glitters in all it’s grandeur with the lofty Sahayadri mountains bordering the eastern part of the beach. Seagazers can have a wonderful time watching the sun playing hide and seek behind the mountains and the effect of colourplay it has on the turquoise blue waters is truly awe inspiring.
There are many cris-crossing rivers, hot water springs and waterfalls in Ratnagiri that increase the beauty of the place by leaps and bounds. Apart from the beach, other tourist attractions at Ratnagiri are the Thibaw Palace where the Burmese King was detained once upon a time, the sea fort of Ratnadurg, Jaigad Fort and Gateway of Ratnagiri. Tourists also visit to the sacred temples of Lord Ganesh at Ganapatipule, Velneshwar and Marleshwar.
Food and shopping:
Food at Ratnagiri is capable of revving up ines apetite. Rice and fish curry, solkadi and kokamkadi, kombdi fry and rawa fried prawns are available at the hamlets near to the sea. Vegetarian food is equally tempting.
Artifacts made of sea-shells can be found in the markets near to the beach. Tourists shop for ambapoli (pancakes made of dried and crushed mangoes), phanaspoli (pancakes made of dried and crushed jack fruit), cashewnuts and alphonso mangoes for reasonable prices.
There are sea front resorts available right on the Ratnagiri beach. A few five star beach resorts providing a bird’s eye view of the beach are located atop a small hillock. Amenities include gym, swimmimg pool, jacuzzi, children’s park etc. Eco-friendly homestays with thatched roofs having the look of countryside homes are also available.
Best time to visit Ratnagiri would be April-June and October-December.
Ratnagiri is directly connected to Mumbai by the Konkan railways. It takes approximately 6-7 hours from Mumbai to reach Ratnagiri. Tourists are sure to be spellbound by the beautiful landscapes all along.
Ratnagiri airport is 12km from the main city. Nearest international airport is Mumbai.
By road: State transport buses as well as private bus services are available at frequent intervals from Mumbai to Ratnagiri. Ratnagiri is well connected to all the cities in Maharashtra.
