Situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from Mahabaleshwar, the principal hill station in the state of Maharashtra, Tapola has all the charms that are associated with a hill station, without its frenzied activities. Sure enough, Mahabaleshwar is more popular in the region, but the fact remains that, Tapola is no less beautiful than Mahabaleshwar. Just come to Tapola on any weekend and you are certain to agree.

 

The biggest attraction in Tapola is the vast water body that is known as the Shivsagar Lake. The lake in realty functions as the reservoir of the great Koyna Dam. For water sports enthusiasts, it is the ideal retreat. Water scooter rides, kayaking, boating and swimming – you name it, you will get it here at Tapola. You could try fishing in the waters of the lake as well with permit. Everything is available in the 90 kilometer long lake-cum-reservoir. However, in terms of natural beauty, there is nothing to beat Tapola’s unique biosphere in the form of the Kas Pathar or the Kas plateau, which turns into a valley of flowers during the rains. Come September, and you will be spellbound, looking at the enormous variety of flowers blooming before your very eyes.

 

You could also make Tapola the base from where you could hike up to the Vasota fort. It is not a difficult trek. Tapola is certainly a very good weekend destination in Maharashtra.

 

How to reach: You can drive your own vehicle to reach Tapola. It will take you about 3.5 hours from Pune. There are a few buses too that can take you to this hill station. If you are taking the train, then you need to get down at Wathar. Tapola is about an hour from there.
