If you love to visit relatively unknown hill stations or unfrequented corners of our lonely planet, then Toranmal in Maharashtra is just right for you. Tucked serenely on the Barwani Hills of the Satpura Range at a height of 3,750 feet, Toranmal is considered to be the second coolest hill station in the state. Situated within the Nandubar district, it is a little over 300 kilometers from Nasik and 200 kilometers from Surat. This hill resort is formed on a small saucer-like plateau, offering year round pleasantly cool climate. Toranmal’s chief attractions comprise of temples, lakes and waterfalls, of which the Gorakhnath Temple outshine others to a great extent.

This temple becomes the venue of worship for hundreds of devotees during the Maha Shivratri ceremony, when a fair is held. There is a procession too. Even though this temple bears the name of guru Gorakhnath who was a disciple of Lord Shiva, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and that’s precisely why Shivratri is so religiously observed here.

Located at the southern edge of the saucer-like plateau is the beautiful Yaswant Lake. It spreads a little over 1.5 square kilometers, and has varying depths that reaches around 27 meters. The lake bears the name of Maharashtra’s former chief minister, Yashwantrao Chavan who reportedly visited the hill station and the lake on horseback.

From a photographer’s point of view, Khadki Point is the ideal spot. It offers a panoramic view of hills as far as the eye can see and the camera can store in its digital memory. Most hill stations have Sunset Points and Lover’s Leap suicide venues. Toranmal proves no exception to this. The photographer makes use of both with equal gusto.

How to reach: You can take the train or the flight to reach Toranmal. If you are flying, then you have to take a taxi from Surat. The closest station is Nandurbar. Buses to this hill station leave from Udia, Udaipura, Umri, Hyderabad, and Shahada.
