Agashiv Caves

Karad, an important city located in the Satara district of Maharashtra has quite a few interesting features. One of them is the group of 66 Buddhist caves that are known as Agashiv caves. In fact, these rock-cut caves from the Hinanyan sect of Buddhism are situated on the south-east portion of the Agashiv hill that rises from one end of the city. The experts tell us that they were built around 1st century BCE, but the fact remains that, they had remained untenanted for most of the following centuries. These are smaller caves in comparison to some others in the state. They are not able to accommodate more than 60 people. In fact this is one reason why these caves were never really that popular among the Buddhist Bikkhus. But some of them did stay here back in the heydays of Buddhism in India.

There are many anecdotes relating to these caves. One of them says that these caves were a part of a gift package of Sanghamitra to the Bhikkhu Sangham in a ceremony conducted in honor of Gautama Buddha. In fact, this message appears in the form of an inscription that you will find inside one of the caves. Sanghamitra was a deeply religious daughter of the Emperor Ashoka and his wife, Empress Devi. She devoted her life towards preaching Lord Buddha’s sermons and teachings during her lifetime.

The Agashiv caves have over the years become a popular place among tourists, particularly those who are looking for a weekend vacation. It is a good choice if you want a break for a few days.
