Navegaon

Located in the Tirora Range of the Bhandara Forest Divison in Bhandara Disrtct of Maharshtra, the Navegaon National Park was established in 1975. It is in the Vidarbha region, and remains one of the most beautiful forest reserves in the state. There are several natural lakes in the reserve that provide water for the denizens of the forest all through the year. These large water bodies enhance the charm of the park as well. Apart from ace predators like tigers and panthers that roam the forest, the park is also home to various species of mammals such as the wild boar, Indian bison (Gaur), spotted deer, sambar, blue bull or nilgai, sloth bear, wild dog and the spotted hyena. Large groups of langur monkeys are mostly found in the eastern side of the park. It is also home to many species of birds and reptiles.

 

Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary was created here in the memory of the famed ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali. A section of the park is earmarked for avid bird watchers where in season (October to March) you can spot hundreds of migratory birds in the lakes. Their loud calls in the early morning will surely wake you up if you are staying within the park. 60% of the bird species in the state are found here.

 

Going for a walk through the jungle in the early morning or taking a jeep safari in the late evening is a thrilling experience. This is one big reason why you must visit the Navegaon Park. It is a perfect weekend trip. It would be even better if you can add a couple of more days into your schedule. With all this greenery around, the forest cover will soothe your city eyes.

 

How to reach: It is best that you reach Nagpur first. From there you can hire a taxi to visit the Navegaon National Park. It should take you about three hours. There is also the Deulgaon railway station, which is just two kilometers from the gates of the park. You can approach the park from Raipur in Chattisgarh too.

 

There are many staying options just outside the park. But do remember, that you will not find any hotels in Navegaon National Park, and resorts in Navegaon National Park. No private properties are allowed inside national parks and reserve forests in India.
