Toranmal – A Small and Unassuming Hill Station, Yet Lovely Place to Visit
Toranmal is a sleepy hill resort that is tucked away in the lofty heights of the Satpura range of mountains in the Indian state of Maharshtra. It stands at 1150 meters above the sea level. Interestingly, Toranmal is located on the borders of three Indian states – Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. You will be able to see the cultures of all three states in this small hill station.
Toranmal mostly remains unpopulated and serene throughout the year. However, it attracts large crowds during Mahashivratri, when thousands of devotees from far off places come to pay their respect at the famous Gorakhnath Temple situated nearby. Nevertheless, it is an ideal resort for travelers who seek peace and solitude among the hills and plateaus for which the Satpura is so famous.
Situated in a saucer-like plateau measuring around 42 square kilometers, Toranmal boasts a charming water body known as the Yashvant Lake, spanning a little more than 1.58 square kilometers that has formed out of a stream flowing through the valley. Interestingly enough, the same stream has also created anther pool a little further down the route. This is popularly called the Lotus Lake as it is perpetually full of the lovely lotus. If, however, you follow the stream further on, you will be splendidly rewarded with a cascading waterfall. The stream hurtles itself into a gorge that is formed out of a cliff here. It is known as Sita Khai.
If you are tired at gazing at the amazing peaks of the Satpura range or the plateaus below, then you can go for boating in this lake. It’s something that both the kids and adults love to do. However, it is difficult to believe that anybody can get tired with the hills. The peaks, with their green cover, and mist, really looks amazing, almost throughout the year. There are many hiking trails as well you can explore to get acquainted with the nature all around.
There is indeed a lot to see and do at Toranmal. Here are some of the attractions.
