Tapola, As Stunning As Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is among the most popular hill stations in Maharashtra. But just a little distance away from Mahabaleshwar is another fantastic destination, which in many ways is even better. This is Tapola. Yes, the rest of India might not have heard of Tapola yet, but ask those who’ve been here already. Many of them would tell you that it is the Kashmir of the West, though it is probably less green than the more famous valley. But Tapola is stunning nonetheless.

Tapola was initially treated as just another visit from Mahabaleshwar, but soon enough, it was realized that Tapola deserved much more than this. It’s so beautiful that it should be treated as a hill station in its own right. Some tourists began to prefer Tapola over the busier Mahabaleshwar. Hotels and resorts began to come up here to house them. However to this day, Tapola has been successful in retaining the rustic hamlet it originally was.

What makes Tapola such a great destination?

There are many reasons actually. There is the stunning Koyna River for instance that meanders through the hills and the meadows. The best way to enjoy the views is probably from a camp beside the river. You might even be able to catch a glimpse of the Great Indian Hornbill if you are lucky.

But remember, you will need a permit to visit this fort, as it is located within the Koyna wild life sanctuary. The fort is almost completely cut off from civilization. This will definitely be an enjoyable trek. There are a few other forts as well around Taopla. You can visit some of them.

There are no apple orchards like Kashmir here. But what you’ll find are strawberry plantations. If you are in Tapola in the season, you will see the red strawberries everywhere. You can visit one of the nurseries too and see how it’s all done.
