Dharur Fort

The city of Dharur is an ancient one. Its history goes back to more than 1200 years. The city is located in the Beed district of Maharashtra. There is a fort located close to the city, and quite aptly, it is called the Dharur Fort. However, its history is not as old as the city – it goes back to about 400 years. There are a few other forts in the district as well, but you won’t find one that is as strong as Dharur. If you are planning a visit to central Maharashtra on the next weekend, you should definitely include the Dharur Fort in your travel itinerary. It is just perfect for a short weekend trip. There are some other fantastic places you can include in your trip as well.

Dharur Fort is located on the top of a hill. Historians agree that it was constructed by Kisvar Khan Lari, who was a commander of Ali Adil Shah around 975. It changed hands many times as the Kingdoms of Bidar, Bijapur and Ahmadnagar captured it. The Mughal forces however captured the fort in 1630. It became a part of the Hyderabad State when Nizam-ul-Mulk, a noble of Aurangazeb created a separate state. This fort was well known for its strength and munitions of war throughout the Deccan. Finally the Indian Government annexed the fort in 1948. Today it belongs to the people of the country.

Sadly however, it is not that well maintained today. There is a lot to see here and so, with proper maintenance, it could be turned into a prominent tourist attraction. Many tourists however still visit this fort. You can see what used to be gates once in its heydays. You can see the ramparts, big wells and the tank. The view from the top is impressive too.

How to reach: There are several airports that surround this fort at Aurangabad, Solapur and Nanded. If you are visiting from far away, then it is best to take a flight and then take a taxi from one of these airports. You can take the train too. It will take you directly to Dharur town. The fort is in the town itself.
