Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary

Chikhaldara, or the Chikhaldara Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature lovers paradise. This sanctuary is located in the state’s Amravati District. Visiting Chikhaldara on a day trip is tough. You should spend at least a couple of nights here to enjoy its serene beauty and the charm of the forest. Wildlife enthusiasts can see many species of birds, insects, butterflies and animals here. Some of the animals you will find here include barking deer, spotted deer, wild dog, Indian bison, jackal, flying squirrel, rhesus monkey, lagur, wild boar, pangolin, sloth bear, leopard, and tiger.

 

You will love Chikhaldara even if you are not into wildlife sighting. Just visit one of the many coffee plantations and see how they make this beverage. You are sure to fall in love with the misty valleys of Chikhaldara, its waterfalls, lakes, and the viewpoints. There’s indeed a lot to do here.

 

According to Indian mythology, Bheema killed Keechaka at a valley in Chikhaldara. It was thus named Keechakadara. But these days, it is known as Chikhaldara. It is today the only hill resort in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. There is the MTDC Resort where you can stay. You can also choose from the many private resorts here, that are often more luxurious than the government property.

 

How to reach: There is no train station at Chikhaldara. The nearest railhead is Badnera, which is at a distance of 110 kilometers. You can take a taxi from there. But there are buses that come to this sanctuary from the closest cities like Nagpur and others. You can drive to this sanctuary too.
