Purnagad

Purnagad is a hill fort in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is not very large in size, but quite strong in construction. The size is such that you will be able to view the whole fort at a single glance. The fort takes its name from the local village which is known as Purnagad. Its main call to fame is the interesting tales of history and of course the stunning nature that is on display here. The Purnagad Fort is located on top of a small hill at the place where the Muchakundi creek originates. You can see both the Arabian Sea and the waters of the creek. The greenery is pleasing to the eyes.

There are just two main entrances. But a fort of this size never really needed more than this. One entrance faces the east, while the other faces west. As you enter the fort, you will be confronted by the deity of Hanumanjee and a well that is bone dry now. Images of the sun, moon and Lord Ganesha are carved out on the main entrance door in bold relief. You can also see a replica of security guards on either sides of the door. There are staircases from several sides that take you to the roof. This is where you need to be to catch the enchanting view of the surroundings.

There is some controversy about who built this fort originally. Some experts believe that it was constructed by Shivaji, while others are of the opinion that Sakhoji Aangre, the son of Kanhoji, the chief of Maratha Navy actually ordered its construction.

How to reach: Take a bus or train to reach Ratnagiri. Buses will leave you at the city depot. You will need to hire an auto rickshaw from the airport, railway station or bus stand to visit the fort, which is about 30 kilometers away. Driving from Mumbai and Pune is possible, but a hassle because of the distance. It can take up to seven hours without stopping.

A few hotels in Purnagad Fort and resorts in Purnagad Fort have come up in recent times. You can stay in one of them.
