Kondane Caves

Buddhism first flourished in the Magadha Empire, gaining patronage from commanding kings such as Asoka, Bimbisar and a few others. However it soon spread to different parts of India, especially the western part of this religiously liberal country. Finding the area friendly and hospitable, Buddhist artists, sculptors and craftsmen engaged themselves in creating large number of caves with inscriptions bearing the teaching of Lord Buddha. Most of these caves were hewn out of black Basalt rock with the help of crude chisels and wooden hammers. According to archaeologists, this period lasted from 1st century BCE to the 10th century BC. While some of these caves barely served as hostels or living quarters for Buddhist monks or Bhikkhus, others bear testimony to the high level of artistry that some of the monks were capable of creating.

The caves at Kondane near Karjat are architectural wonders that took shape many centuries ago. The exquisitely chiseled façade, the octagonal ornamentally designed pillars and the richly decorated interior are absolutely awe-inspiring. The adornment of the front elevation of the cave at Kondane has some affinity to those at Bhaje near Pune. However the details are more pronounced here.

Also to be mentioned are the delicately designed figures that have been chiseled out of solid rock. They look lively and dynamic even to experienced eyes. To be precise, wherever you may set your eyes, be that the Vihara, Chaitya or Stupa enclosed within the Kondane caves, you cannot miss the touch of the high level of artistry that is evident everywhere. Despite the earthquake that hit the area during the early 1900s, causing extensive damage to many stupas, what remains intact is enough to make you proud of India’s past glory and her ancient heritage.

How to reach: Take a bus or rickshaw (Rs.150 – Rs.200) from Karjat to Kondivade village and from Kondivade proceed to Kondane or Kharvandi village. From both these villages the Kondana caves are a one hour walk.
