Mahakali Caves

Buddhist cave temples in India have been classified into two distinct groups, as they belong to two key dimensions of Buddhist faith – the Himayana and Mahayana forms of dedication. The cave temples belonging to the Himayana sect are mostly found in the western part of India at Bhaja, Kondane, Bedesa, Pitalkhara, Ajanta, Nasic, Karli and adjacent areas. Mahakali caves or Mahakali Buddhist caves (also known as Kondivita caves) are located in the western suburb of Andheri in the metropolitan city of Mumbai – they belong to this group. These rock-cut caves have probably been built between 1st century BC and 6th century BC.

Mahakali caves consist of 19 rock-cut monuments that comprise two groups – 4 caves situated in the north-western side, and 15 caves in the south-eastern side. While the former group of caves is believed to have been created mostly between 4th and 5th century, the latter appears to have been built much earlier. Most of the Mahakali caves served as Viharas. However cave 9 of the south-eastern side was a Chaitya. Carved out of solid Basalt rock, these caves have withstood the elements for several centuries, hardly evidencing mark of time. In fact, you can still observe all the seven depictions of Lord Buddha and figures representing Buddhist mythological stories in cave 9.

You should certainly visit these caves. They are virtually within the city of Mumbai. You can go there on any weekend. The Mahakali caves are a must-visit for those who are interested in Buddhism, Indian history, or sculpture from another age and time.

How to reach: The best way to visit these caves is by taking a bus. The 333 route bus from Andheri East will take you there. You can also take the 410 route bus between Amrut Nagar to the caves. You can take the train as well. Get down at the Dadar railway station. Mahakali caves are just a short walk away.

You can visit these caves from Mumbai itself. They are so close to the city that it is pointless to search for hotels in Mahakali caves, resorts in Mahakali caves or cottages in Mahakali caves.
