Vasota
Most military bastions carry tales of bravery and sacrifice. Vasota Fort, which is located on the western edge of the Satara District in Maharashtra, is one such. It is covered by dense forest with the still waters of the Koyna providing a backdrop. Years ago, how this fort was fiercely defended by a stunning Marathi girl Tai Telin, who was an escort of the fort’s keeper, is folklore today. Her bravery is a shining example for Marathi women even today.
It was constructed by the Kolhapur Shilahara Raja Bhoja II. This fort changed hands several times as it was in the possession of the Marathas, Shirkes and Mores through the 16th century. Vasota eventually was captured by the legendary Maratha leader Shivaji during his conquest of Javli in 1655. Its name was changed to Vyaghragad (Vyagra stands for tiger). This name was chosen because of the strong defensive attributions of the fort. After Shivaji death, Bajirao Peshwa continued with his leader’s mission of ousting the Mughal invaders. He kept his army secured within the ramparts of the Vasota Fort. In 1818 there was a severe attack with heavy artillery. The fort fell.
If you want to enjoy a jungle trek in Maharashtra and see some history too, then the Vasota Fort is the right destination. You have to cross a dense forest to reach the fort. Plan it on any weekend. But try to avoid the monsoon. But even before that, you must do a boat ride from Bamnoli or Tapola. This is the only way to reach this fort. Remember, it is located inside the Koyna Wild Life Sanctuary. Vasota is cut off completely from civilization. So carry your provisions.
How to reach: Reaching this fort is a challenge and an adventure. You have to cross a lake and then must trek through a dense forest to reach the fort. The base village is Bamnoli. Some trekkers start the journey also from Tapola. You will need to hire a taxi from Vasota bus station to reach these villages. Vasota is 30 kilometers away from the fort.
There are only campsites at the Bamnoli and Tapola villages. Obviously you won’t find any hotels in Vasota Fort or resorts in Vasota Fort.
