VishalGad

Vishalgad Fort is among the larger and the more important forts in Maharashtra. In fact, its size is reflected in the name itself – Vishal. However, this fort is also often known as Khilna or Khelna. The Vishalgad Fort name was given by none other than Shivaji Maharaj, who annexed it in 1659 to the Maratha Empire. The previous ruler was Adilshah of Bijapur.

There is an interesting anecdote of how Shivaji was able to conquer this fort. His army was attacking it, but the Adilshahi garrison was able to stave off all aggression. Shivaji then devised a unique plan. Some Marathas walked up to the gates and stated that they wanted to join the Adilshahi forces because they were not happy with Shivaji’s rule. They were allowed to enter. The next day, the Marathas revolted and caused complete chaos inside the fort. Shivaji picked this moment to attack again. He was able to capture the fort quickly. Shivaji turned it into a watch tower. There is an interesting story of how Adilshaha captured the fort as well. According to legend, there was this Bhosala warrior who climbed up with an iguana (Ghorpad) to capture it. He was given the title of Ghorpade.

The Vishalgad Fort is located at the top of a mountain that offers stunning views of the surrounding regions. Reach the top and you will be face to face with the Sahyadri range in front of you. Even the approach road to the fort is beautiful. It passes through thickly wooden forests. You will certainly love it here, for its beauty and historical significance.
