Jawhar – Mahabaleshwar of Thane

Have you heard of Jawhar? Probably not! Very few people outside Maharashtra know about this serene and scenic hill station. And to be absolutely frank about it, most residents of the state don’t know about Jawhar as well. That’s sad of course, considering how beautiful the place really is. It seems that some places are destined to remain hidden from the public eye. You will just have to come here and spend a weekend, and you will be convinced about this like so many others. So will it be Jawhar next time?

Jawhar is located in Thane district. It is just 80 kilometers from Nasik. The distance from Mumbai is 180 kilometers. Jawhar is one of the few tribal regions in the state. The best known thing about the place is the Warli paintings, the popularity of which has crossed the national border. So while you are at Jawhar, you may visit the handicraft center and even some villages to pick up some of these paintings. You will be able to bring a little bit of village life to your drawing room. It could be a very good souvenir. Jawhar has strong cultural ethos, unlike most other tourist destinations in the country.

Mahabaleshwar of Thane

Jawhar is often referred to as the “Mahabaleshwar of Thane” because of its scenic beauty. But it’s kind of unfair really. Sure enough, Mahabaleshwar is a top hill station in the state. But Jawhar need not play second fiddle to any other place. Given half a chance, it could one day become a top tourist draw. Jawhar certainly has all the potential.

Sunset Point

You will love the Sunset Point at Jawhar. It’s wonderfully calm and cool. You are sure to remember the sunset view for years. A platform has been created for the convenience of tourists. On your way down, you can visit the Gramadaivat temple nearby.

Shirpamal

Shirpamal is a structure that was created by the Maratha warrior king Shivaji Maharaj. It stands proudly on top of a hill. Shirpamal was constructed to allow the royal family to see the movement of enemies. Today it stands as a landmark. Head to the top and you will be rewarded with stunning views of the valleys below. It is among the top tourist attractions at Jawhar.

You can also visit the Jai Vilas Palace, which is locally known as the Raj Bari. A lot of movies are shot here. You will be able to see the lifestyle of tribal kings. There is also the Dabdaba Falls, Dabhosa waterfall, and the Jai Sagar Dam you could visit.
