Sajjangad

Though Sajjangad is a fort and it obviously has historical significance, but the truth is that, it is today better known for religious reasons. “Sajjangad” in the Marathi language means the “Fort of Good People”. The history books tell us that the name indeed is an apt one. It is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas, who was a prominent social reformer in the 17th century. Ramdas had a huge influence on people at that time. But there have been a few battles here. For instance, the Adilshah dynasty took over the fort from the Brahmini emperors, the establishers of the fort. Adilshah was defeated later by the Mughal emperor, after which it passed on to Mughal rule. Later on, it passed into the hands of Shivaji Maharaj. It was Shivaji who requested Shri Ramdas to set up a monastery here.

Thousands of pilgrims come to the Sajjangad Fort now. It has become a major pilgrim center in Maharashtra. The tourists are controlled by Saint Ramdas Swami Sansthan. They are in charge of managing the fort too. This is a must visit for you if you are a follower. You are sure to enjoy the morning prayers, bhajans, Maha Naivedya, and the reading sessions from the Dasbodh manuscript of Ramdas.

You might like to visit the fort even if you aren’t a follower. Those who are artistically inclined or interested in history might like to take a look at the ancient religious scripts here. You will find them encrypted on the walls of the fort. A lot of tourists come to Sajjangad just to see these scripts.

How to reach: The closest railhead is Satara station. You can take a bus from Satara to reach the fort. There are auto rickshaws as well that are easily available. You will also find buses from Pune and some other cities. Another option is to drive. You can always do that.

There are places you can stay in Satara. This is your best option. You won’t find any resorts in Sajjangad or hotels in Sajjangad.
