Shivneri

Shivneri will always have a special place in Maratha history. This is where the great Shivaji Maharaj was born. In fact, the name Shivaji also comes from the name of the fort. Shivneri Fort is named after Shivai Devi, a goddess. So this is how it happened – Goddess Shivai to Shivneri Fort to Shivaji. This great Maratha leader was born in this fort on February 19th 1630.  Shivaji spent his childhood in this fort. Shahaji, Shivaji’s father chose this fort for his pregnant wife Jijabai, because in those days, it was very difficult to climb to this fort. This is why he thought that his wife would remain safe here to give birth.

Now of course, it is much easier to reach Shivneri Fort. It is located a couple of hours from Pune. There are regular bus services from Mumbai, Pune and Junnar. This has become a popular trekking destination too in recent years. It is an easy trek, and that certainly is one reason behind its popularity. You will have a lot of fun climbing the steps to reach the top.

There is a lot to see here. You should certainly see the temples and the Shiv Mandir, which is actually the place where Shivaji was born. If you are proud of your Maratha heritage, then this is a must visit. Reach the “Ambarkhana”, or the point from where the offenders were thrown out. There is a small lake as well at the fort’s center. Come to Shivneri on a weekend. You will like it. But remember. You should give it enough time, because the Shivneri Fort is massive.

How to reach: If you are taking a bus for the fort, then you must reach Junnar first at the base of the hill. Those who are coming by train from different places need to get down at Pune railway station. Take a bus from there to reach Junnar. If you are driving, then you can drive straight to Junnar.

Are you interested in hotels in Shivneri, or resorts in Shivneri? Well, the truth is, you won’t find any accommodation here. Travellers often plan it as a one day trek. You could carry your tents if you plan to stay on the Fort. If you are looking for hotel rooms, you could get it at Junnar.
