Bhaje Caves

Bhaje Caves is located near the scenic hill resort of Lonavala in the Western Ghats. These caves were turned into Buddhist religious center during the 1^st century AD. The Bhaje Caves have however now been classified as a national monument, and are thus better maintained. Thousands of weekend vacationers who come to Lonavala also visit these caves to appreciate their beauty and get amazed by the fabulous architecture of these rock-cut caves.

There are actually 18 caves in this group. You might visit them all if you want to, but remember, you should never miss the 12^th cave. This is the Chaityagriha. This is the largest cave as well. You will see stupas too that were constructed to remember the Buddhist Acharyas. The names of the Acharyas are inscribed on the rock to this day. There is another cave that is just outside the network. It is cave number 20. The carvings here are fantastic. But you cannot go in as this cave has been locked by the Archeological Survey of India.

It is believed that these caves are more ancient than the cave system at Karle. Some experts have mentioned that the caves were carved out in the 2^nd century BC. Experience ancient India!
