Panhala

Panhala is an important fort in Maharashtra. Some historians even say that it is perhaps the most important fort in the Deccan region as it has witnessed a lot of history. Panhala is also among the largest forts in the area. It covers an area of more than seven kilometers. Its elegant and impressive look is sure to impress you. Thousands of tourists from all across the state visit Panhala Fort every year. There are visitors from other states too.

 

This fort has changed hands a number of times over several centuries. The formative years of Tarabai of Kolhapur were spent in this fort. Shivaji took the fort once Afzul Khan the general of Bijapur was dead. However Adil Shah II sent an army to take it over in 1660. It was a hard fought battle, but in the end, Shivaji lost. He had to escape. However Shivaji was able to take it back 13 years later. Sambhaji, the son of Shivaji fell out with his father. Shivaji imprisoned him in Panhala. Of course, the two reconciled later at the time of Shivaji’s death.

 

There is a lot to see here. You can easily spend a few hours in this fort and go back hundreds of years to the time of Tarabai, Shivaji and Adil Shah. So be sure that you have time in your hands. A trip here is just perfect for a weekend. You will be able to learn about Maratha and Indian history, and you can also enjoy the nature all around. There are a few charming destinations around the Panhala as well. you should make it a point to visit them as well.

 

How to reach: You can take a bus to reach the fort from Pune. There are regular Maharashtra State Transport buses. You can drive your car or even a bike to reach Sinhagad. The Ghat road is very scenic.

 

The best place to stay around Panhala is Kolhapur. It is just 18 kilometers away. You won’t be able to find any hotels in Panhala, or resorts in Panhala.
