Silvassa, Much More Than a Portuguese Colony

Silvassa is a former Portuguese colony. But now it’s better known for its beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, water sports and scenic beauty. Silvassa is located between the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat – it is the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Silvassa has become an extremely popular weekend getaway among nature lovers. Backpackers and trekkers would often pack up their things and hit the trail at the first opportunity presented to them. It’s much the same for wildlife lovers and avid photographers. And it is getting even better now, with the lion safari and deer sanctuary. The safari is located at the Vasona Park, which is just ten kilometers from the city. It is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people. The deer park is located at Satmaliya.

All around the city, there are plenty of rivers and lakes. So you could go away and have a picnic if you want. You may want to try some boating or angling too if you want. If you want, you may also try jet skis, water scooters and kayaking too. Your choice! Or you could explore the surrounding hills, valleys and countryside. There are quite a few hiking trails for trekkers and nature photographers.

Silvassa and its Portuguese Influence

You will see distinct Portuguese heritage almost everywhere you go in the city. There are some wonderful Roman-Catholic churches that you could visit. You will also find stone walls from the days of the city’s Portuguese rulers. In fact, the name of the city itself comes from “Silva”, which is a Portuguese word that means “wood”. The colonial evidence can be viewed to this day in the city, even though in recent times Silvassa has emerged as quite an industrial and commercial hub. People from all over the country come here to work, but the city’s own individuality remains.

Silvassa Tribal Culture

Silvassa is known for its rich cultural heritage as well. It’s the home of the Warli language, which is a mixture of Gujarati and Marathi. Do visit the museum that aims to preserve the rich tribal traditions and culture. You will get an insight into the culture and ways of life of the original locals.

And lastly, do try some shopping here. You will find many interesting handmade products. There are paper bags, local Warli paintings, palm-leaf mats, bamboo crafts, smoking pipes and more.
