Amboli – A Beautiful Hill Station in the Sahyadri Hills

Amboli is certainly not among the most popular hill stations in Maharashtra. That distinction should probably go to Mahabaleshwar, Lavasa, Matheran, and perhaps even to Lonavala and Khandala. But the truth is that, there are plenty of other small hill stations that stand out on the tourist map because of their inherent beauty. Take for instance Saputara, Toranmal or Mulshi. Amboli is another name in this long list. But it’s more than just another addition. Amboli is actually a fantastic destination. It could be just the right place for your next weekend getaway.

The View Is Stunning From the Top

Amboli is located coyly on the Sahyadri hills at an altitude of 690 meters. This is the last stretch of the mountains on the Western Ghats before the coastal region begins. This means that if you are at one of the viewpoints at Amboli, then you will be able to catch the Konkan coast at a distance. And if it’s a clear day, then you will even be able to look far out into the sea. That’s miles and miles of unobstructed view. There are many viewpoints you can choose from. This means you get almost a 360 degree view.

In fact, you can see the Konkan coast on three sides from Amboli. You will see the coastline like a small ribbon at a distance. There are very few places in the country from where you can see the coastline like you can do from Amboli. You can also see the fertile plains, lush hills, sweeping valleys, and some of the other peaks of the Sahyadri. The small houses and moving automobiles look like toys from the top. The sweeping panorama is stunning to say the least. It is easy to spend hours here, looking at the various landmarks from the vantage points.

There’s much more you can do here. You can head to Hiranya Keshi for some angling. If you are lucky with your catch, then you may want to barbeque it for your lunch. There are some beautiful waterfalls too close enough. There’s a lot of water flowing here during the monsoon months.

Amboli is certainly a pleasant hill station. Escape the heat of the valley below. Enjoy the cool climate of the hills during the summer months. Winters are mild here as well. No wonder, it is estimated that more than 50,000 tourists are heading for Amboli every year these days.
