Trimbakeshwar – Among the Holiest Places for Hindus

The small village of Trimbak, just 36 kilometers from Nashik in Maharashtra, is famous for two reasons. This is the source of the Godavari River. But the main reason why this village has come into prominence is because of the fact that this is where you will find one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It draws thousands of pilgrims from all over the country. It gets busier during festivals like the Kumbh Mela. Hindus from other countries visit Trimbak as well to pay their homage. It is among the most important temples for Hindus.

The Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar temple, also known as Trambakeshwar, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. However the Jyotirlinga here is quite uncommon. There are three faces on the idol symbolizing Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva or Rudra, and Lord Brahma. It brings together all three faces of the universe – the God of Creation, Protection and Destruction. Hindu shastra tells us that all three combine to form the power of a single God. This is aptly depicted here in the form of one single Jyotirlinga. The Jyotirlinga here has however been eroding for a while now because of excessive usage of water. It is believed that the erosion symbolizes erosion of values, beliefs and ethics in society.

There are several hotels of all sizes and dharmashalas too in the region where you can stay. The Gujarathi community has constructed many of them. They are open for travelers at affordable prices.

Festivals in the Trimbakeshwar Temple

It is considered that Monday is the best day to offer prayers at this temple. Priests carry the idol in a palanquin and move within the temple complex in a procession. The biggest festival is of course the Kumbh Mela, which is held in intervals of 12 years. Millions of people, including devotees come from all over the country and even abroad to offer their prayers and take a bath in the Godavari River. It is believed that the bath washes off all sins. The second most important festival is the Shivratri. This is of course an annual event.

Trimbak, A Place of Great Natural Beauty Too

People who are religious should definitely visit the Trimbakeshwar temple. But others will love Trimbak as well because of its peaceful atmosphere and pleasant climate. Plus there is the Godavari River and the rolling hills in the region. Considering everything, Trimbak is certainly a place to be included in the travel list.
