Daman – A Nice Portuguese Colony

Daman is a wonderful sea resort on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It was once a Portuguese enclave, along with Diu. Even today, you will see many buildings that boast of their unique Portuguese architecture. As you walk down the streets or drive through them, you will be transported to another time. Almost every visitor to this little city is thrilled with its historical heritage. So in this way, Daman is actually quite similar to Goa. But there are differences too. For instance, you won’t find any beach here. There are hardly any late night parties as well. But that doesn’t take anything away from this charming beach resort. In fact, a lot of people who prefer a quieter vacation often opt for Daman.

But make no mistake, liquor is available easily here. In fact, you will see a lot of Guajarati’s in Daman who come just because of the freedom to drink. It is prohibited in Gujarat.

The Beaches in Daman

So go for Daman. It’s certainly worth visiting. You’ll probably notice the salty breeze before anything else. The gently swinging palm and casurina trees will come next. Of course you cannot miss the beaches here. There are some amazing ones in the city and close to it. The most popular ones are Devka beach and Jampore beach. You’ll love them both. Actually, the beaches in Daman look quite the same as the ones you find in Goa. Yes, they are that good.

The Jampore beach is for those who prefer solitude. This beach with low tides is perfect for swimming and other water sports. It goes all the way to Gujarat. Devka on the other hand is busier, because of the musical fountains and amusement park there. It turns into a carnival during the evenings and the festive season. You can swim or ride a pony as well. The manicured lawns make the place look even better.

Daman is known for taking it easy. The locals love their relaxed pace and unhurried attitude. Instead of hurrying away for work, they often prefer to discuss the storied of Nani Daman and Moti Daman.

While at Daman, you can think of visiting the Diu fort on a day trip. It looks amazing from the top. Or you can go up the lighthouse. You will get a spectacular view from here as well. there is also the Diu museum you can visit.
