Antur Fort

The city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra is an interesting one. There is fort here, and there are also the caves of Ajanta and Ellora close enough. There are some other good forts in the region too. Take the Antur fort for example, which is about an hour away from the city.

The Antur fort is a 15th century construction that stands on the spur of a hill. Interestingly, this fort has not seen any battles in its many centuries of existence. But this fact does not take away anything from Antur. This is one construction that towers tall over the surrounding areas. The Antur fort was named after a Maratha Chief who built it. The fort remained in the possession of his descendants for more than a century. Eventually it passed on to the Mughal rulers like so many other forts in India.

However, during most parts of 16th and 17th centuries it remained with the Nizam Shahi of Ahmednagar, as is evidenced from the series of stone inscriptions found inside the fort. A miniature mosque within the Antur fort contains plaques written in Persian lingo. For instance, one of these reads “this lower wall was constructed during the reign and under the auspices of Burhan Nizam Shah. Another state that “this arch was built under orders from His Highness Malik Ambar”. However, all these are bygone stories since these are dated 1035 Hijri, corresponding to 1619 AD.

How to reach: Aurangabad is certainly the best place from where you can visit the fort. There is an airport too here. And of course there is a busy railway station as well. The city is just about an hour away from Antur fort. You can hire a taxi to reach it from Aurangabad.

Almost everybody who visits this fort stay at Aurangabad. There are plenty of good staying options in the city. You won’t find any hotels closer to the Antur fort, resorts near Antur fort or cottages near Antur fort.
