Kandhar Fort

Look around the country. You will find hundreds, possibly thousands of forts all over. But sadly, most of them are not in great condition now. It’s a different story with the Kandhar fort.

Superbly maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the sprawling Kandhar fort is located at the town of Kandhar in the Nanded district of Maharashtra. It attracts hordes of visitors throughout the year. Believed to have been built by the Rashtrakuta King Krishna-III of Malkhed who described himself as Kandharpuradhiswar or the lord of Kandhar, the fort is open to all. Surrounded by a moat which is filled by naturally flowing water, the fort consists of several areas that are earmarked for different purposes. For instance, the living quarters are separated from the kitchen area which is large enough for cooking food for several regiments of forces that were permanently stationed within the fort premises. The stables for horses and elephants were kept apart from the living areas too.

You can reach up to the roof of the fort by climbing wide staircases that has been repaired now. From the top, you can view the cannons that were placed strategically on the ramparts. There was a time when they were meant to be fired against the enemy forces to prevent them from entering the fort. The water filled deep moat also worked as a deterrent. They go up to a height 40 feet from the ground level.

How to reach: You should reach the city of Nanded first. There are many ways of doing this. There is a small airport here and so you can fly in. there is a busy railway station too. Book a taxi in Nanded to visit the Kandhar fort. It should take you about an hour.

Kandhar is just a small town, and as such, you won’t find any decent accommodation here. It is best to stay in Nanded city instead of trying to find resorts in Kandhar fort, cottages in Kandhar fort or home stays in Kandhar fort.
